ETHE becomes the world’s number 1 education journal according to Journal Citation Reports

The International Journal of Education Technology in Higher Education (ETHE), led by Edul@b research group members Josep M. Duart and Marc Romero, has achieved outstanding results in the main international bibliometric indexes, becoming the number 1 journal in education according to the Journal Citation Reports (JCR).
ETHE is a scientific journal of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) co-published with three leading international institutions: Dublin City University (DCU) in Ireland, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) in Chile, and Guizhou University (GZU) in China. This inter-university collaboration strengthens the journal’s global dimension and fosters a diverse and cross-disciplinary perspective on the international evolution of educational technology.
Furthermore, ETHE is a Diamond Open Access journal, meaning it is free of charge for both readers and authors. This model guarantees the free, equitable, and global dissemination of scientific knowledge, promoting the democratization of access to research in higher education and educational technology.
With the following results, ETHE consolidates its position as a global leader in the field of educational technology and online learning, achieving historic milestones that reinforce its academic impact:
- Journal Citation Reports (JCR) – Journal Impact Factor (JIF): 16.7 (Q1). ETHE significantly increases its impact factor (8.6) achieved the previous year, rising to first place worldwide in the “Education and Educational Research” category among a total of 756 indexed journals.
- Scopus CiteScore: 27.7 (Q1). This indicator places ETHE as the second open access journal in education and ninth in the field of Computer Sciences in Scopus, a substantial improvement over the previous year (19.3).
- SJR (Scimago Journal Ranking): 3,912 (Q1). Also in this ranking, the journal makes a significant qualitative leap (the previous year it was 2,578), becoming the world’s leading journal in the e-learning category.
These achievements are the result of sustained, collaborative work by the editorial team:Elsa Corominas, Aleix Rodríguez, and Walewska Duran (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), reviewers, authors, and readers, as well as the scientific community, which continues to rely on ETHE as a platform for disseminating relevant research.
Last year, ETHE celebrated 20 years of publications with the goal of continuing to “offer a space for academics and practitioners to share their research and experiences. Contributing to the dissemination of educational theories, findings and results, research proposals, and experiences in the field of educational technology in higher education.”
In this context of excellence and international recognition, the results achieved by ETHE are not only a significant milestone for the journal, but also for the research community that promotes research in educational technology at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. This success reaffirms Edul@b’s leadership and consolidates ETHE’s impact and relevance as a key platform for the generation and dissemination of knowledge in the field of online higher education. With a history spanning more than two decades, the journal looks to the future with a firm commitment to continue contributing to a more innovative, open, and transformative higher education.
