Edul@b presents how to improve formative assessment through generative AI at MoodleMOOT 2025 (Zagreb, Croatia)

On June 13, 2025, Dr. Lourdes Guàrdia (Edul@b Research Group, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) participated in the MoodleMOOT 2025 conference (Zagreb, Croatia), with a presentation focused on the use of generative artificial intelligence to provide personalized and quality feedback in higher education.
The presentation, entitled “Enhancing Formative Assessment in Higher Education through Generative AI: Toward Personalized and High-Quality Feedback”, was given by Dr. Lourdes Guàrdia, representing the team formed by the members of Edul@b, Dr. Nati Cabrera and Dr. Marcelo Maina, as well as the rest of the researchers from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya David García, Carolina García, Marcelo Maina, Montse Vall-llovera, Rosa Mayordomo, María Jesús Marco, Julià Minguillón, Carlos Casado, Robert Clarisó and the speaker herself.
The audience learned how FeedSmart, an AI-powered feedback assistant, helps teachers create high-quality, personalized feedback across a variety of learning scenarios, from programming fundamentals to master’s thesis supervision. Based on pedagogical principles and supported by empirical research, the experience demonstrates the potential of generative AI to improve both the quality and efficiency of teachers’ feedback practices.
This contribution is part of the conference program with the theme “Personalised formative feedback through Generative AI in Higher Education”, a line of research aimed at exploring how generative AI can contribute to transforming formative assessment processes, promoting a more student-centered learning experience adapted to their specific needs.
MoodleMoot 2025, held in Zagreb on 12 and 13 June, focused on educational innovation using Moodle, highlighting topics such as constructivist alignment in teaching, the integration of generative artificial intelligence to improve learning and feedback, gamification as a motivational tool, and technical innovations in the platform, such as the upgrade to Moodle 5.0. The conference brought together teachers, researchers and developers with the aim of sharing good practices and exploring new ways to enrich the educational experience in higher education.
