RYC: Professional Learning Ecologies for Digital Scholarship supporting professionalism in the data-driven university

Período: 2018-2023

Subvención concedida:  308.600€.

Descripción: Data-driven science and data-driven education cross the daily scenarios of academic practice, and are a key dimension of the modernisation of Higher Education. This project aims at exploring the emerging issues of data literacy within the context of digital scholarship, towards the development of a conceptual and interventionist apparatus supporting scholars’ critical awareness of data practices within the context of Open Science and Open Education frameworks.  To this regard, the project will embrace the construct of “learning ecologies” as lens to explore how scholars make sense of the current data-practices, the perceived learning needs, the institutional opportunities, etc. in terms of professional learning. Moreover, the construct will also set the basis to generate spaces to deal with the evolving phenomenon of the data-driven university from a critical, non-tecnodeterminist and participatory perspective. The chosen methodological approach encompasses mixed methods including three phases of research development: a first phase of desk research (including methods of data-extraction from the web and a survey); a second phase consisting of an ethnographic study; and one phase of design based research (DBR).

Análisis de los efectos de la provisión de feedback soportado por tecnologías digitales de monitoreo sobre las competencias transversales (eFeedskills)

Period: 2020-2022

Funding bodyProyecto de I+D+i» de los Programas Estatales de Generación de Conocimiento y Fortalecimiento Científico y Tecnológico del Sistema de I+D+i y de I+D+i Orientada a los Retos de la Sociedad.

Project reference: PID2019-104285GB-I00

Grant amount:  32.670€

Descripción: The project presented aims to study the effects of the implementation of self-regulatory feedback strategies on cross-curricular competences development, as well as to analyse the role of technology as a monitoring and support system during the learning process to improve learning to learn competence, autonomous learning and initiative competences. Although previous studies on self-regulation demonstrate the need of developing the evaluative judgement, it is still difficult to encourage this capacity, which is basic for lifelong learning.Even though there are plenty studies on the role of Learning Analytics (LA), scarce attention has been driven to the critical problems related to the adoption of technological monitoring practices in learning contexts, such as the datas nature, the inferences that are made and the students use of these relevant data. The project intends to use a research approach to develop a technological support that combines information from the virtual campus activities together with the design of an application (Chatbot/tutor) elaborated with a co-design process. It is aimed to be studied whether the creation and application of a tool for competence monitoring has significant positive effects on competences development.

Lifelong learning ecologies: contributions of ICT to teachers’ professional development (ECO4LEARN)

Ecologías de aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida: contribuciones de las TIC al desarrollo profesional del profesorado

Period: 2013-2015.
Description: The social changes in which we have been immersed for over a decade have also brought about changes in the needs of the workplace and the skills and knowledge required of individuals in order to succeed in today‟s society. Thus, there has been a shift in workers‟ needs in terms of lifelong learning. Informal and non-formal training models, which appear to allow for professional development opportunties that are better suited to recipients‟ needs, have become increasingly popular. The use of social networks and other means of bringing people together have grown in popularity, especially with the advent of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), thereby expanding the horizons for lifelong and lifewide learning. Within this setting there emerge complex sets of contexts, comprised of activities, resources, and relationships, which provide new opportunities for learning in both physical and virtual spaces. These sets of contexts are referred to as ecologies of learning. With this in mind, and with the aim of focusing our research on one particular group of professionals, i.e., primary and secondary school teachers, we set out to provide answers to the following questions: What role do ecologies of lifelong learning play in teachers‟ training and professional development? What are the elements that make up teachers‟ lifelong and lifewide learning ecologies? What role do each of the elements play and how do ICTs contribute? What benefits do teachers find in the various components that make up learning ecologies beyond those of traditional development schemes? The aim of the project it has been to analyse and understand the ways in which learning ecologies contribute to the development and improvement of the professional activities of primary school teachers.

Period: 2010-2011.
Description:  The  project  is  devised  towards  the quality  improvement of  the  higher education system and of the activity undertaken by the faculty at the university. In order to achieve these objectives, it focuses on the identification of teaching skills, defined by the academic community through training programs specifically designed for this purpose. Taking the implementation of the European Higher Education as starting point, the project intends to analyze the skills considered to belong by nature to the teaching task, as well as to define the necessary procedures to acquire, develop and evaluate them through training. At the same time it seeks to identify models, strategies, tools and resources. To this identification process we will make the necessary bibliographical research, in which the criteria of teaching excellence will allow us to select a representative sample of teachers. The selection will be performed through a survey and its quality will be validated by experts. The primary objective of the project shown here is basically to contribute to the quality training of university teachers, allowing the acquisition, development and evaluation of the skills considered essential by the academic community, in order to properly undertake their professional tasks, defined as: interpersonal, methodology, communication, planning and management of teaching, teamwork and innovation.

eLitigis: virtual teamwork space

eLitigis: Espacio de Trabajo en Equipo Virtual

Period: 2007-2008.
Description: The experience relative to this project comes from the need for appropriate methodologies to develop competency in the field of law through virtual learning environments. In this sense, the UOC’s educational model, focusing on the activities undertaken by the student to learn, makes extensive use of technology and is virtually fully developed. In this context, the experience we have undertaken includes the development of a methodology especially designed to achieve and asses the skills that a law student should have in relation to a normal judicial process and, specifically in relation to the different roles they can play: actor, defendant and judge. To develop this methodology, it was necessary to adapt a technological tool (wiki) and designing different cases and tutorials to performing the activity. However, the achievement of learning objectives by students was assessed as well as the achievement of the experience’s goals, from the student’s point of view (online survey) and from the professor’s opinion (interview). These results, which are described in the communication, show that these new methods, of teaching and learning of law, decisive influence on motivation and satisfaction of students during a particularly arduous educational process, but also evident, in the case of teachers, an excessive workload if they want to achieve an adequate monitoring of the evolution of teaching and learning. These results make us think about the feasibility of generalizing an experience as successfully as eLitigis.
