Digitally competent teachers: Thematic Peer Group Report

The European University Association (EUA) recently published a report titled “Digitally Competent Teachers Thematic Peer Group Report”. Dr. Montse Guitert and Dr.Teresa Romeu, from the Edul@b group, participated in the DIGI-HE Thematic Peer Group “Digitally Competent Teachers in Designing Quality Learning Environments”.

The group aimed to explore how Higher Education institutions can support digitally competent teachers to design and implement quality digital learning. In a rapidly expanding digital environment, teachers need digital competence to create and sustain learning designs, assess student learning, and promote student engagement. To address the digital dimension of teaching activity in a more factual manner, the group adopted the term “digitally supported”. To be fully digitally competent, teachers should master 22 competencies defined in the European Digital Competence Framework for Educators (DigCompEdu). Focus was mainly on developing teachers’ digital competences and how higher education institutions can meet these needs.

Montse Guitert and Teresa Romeu, as well as other digital education experts from Lusofona University (Portugal), Ovidius University of Constanta (Romania), Lund University (Sweden), University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western Switzerland (HES-SO), Izmir University of Economics (Türkiye) and University of Nottingham (United Kingdom), contributed their knowledge and experience to the report. Insights and recommendations from the panel are part of a wider effort to guarantee that higher education institutions are prepared to meet the challenges of a digital age and provide students with skills and tools that will enable them to succeed in an increasingly competitive job market.

It is a valuable contribution to the ongoing conversation about digital competences in higher education. As a result of experts such as Montse Guitert and Teresa Romeu, institutions can develop strategies and practices that will enable them to meet the challenges of a digital future and provide their students with a quality education.
